Happy 95th Birthday!!!

Ferruccio Elio Arturo Lamborghini (April 28, 1916 – February 20, 1993) was an Italian industrialist. Born to grape farmers from the comune of Renazzo di Cento in the Emilia-Romagna region, his mechanical know-how led him to enter the business of tractor manufacturing in 1948, when he founded Lamborghini Trattori, which quickly became an important manufacturer of agricultural equipment in the midst of Italy's post-war economic reform. In 1959, he opened an oil heater factory, Lamborghini Bruciatori, which later entered the business of producing air conditioning equipment. In 1963, he most famously created Automobili Lamborghini, a maker of high-end sports cars. Lamborghini sold off many of his interests by the late 1970s, and retired to an estate in Umbria, where he pursued winemaking.

Empire Carpet Man has died at age 89.

588-2300, Empire Today!!!!

Lynn Hauldren, 89, the advertising copywriter who became the inspiration for the Empire Carpet Man in the 1970s and helped launch the company's signature jingle into national recognition, died Tuesday, according to an Empire spokesperson.
Mr. Hauldren rose to became a decades-long advertising icon, as the person who wrote the catchy jingle that accompanies the company's famous phone number, and often delivered it with style: “Five-eight-eight, two-three-hundred ... Empire.”

“Lynn was truly passionate about the Empire brand,” said Steve Silvers, chief executive officer for Empire.
“He has made an indelible mark on advertising history with his creativity and warmth. Lynn will always have a special place in the hearts of many. Our thoughts are with his family during this time.”
The company’s owner during the time requested that Mr. Hauldren serve as the on-air talent for the spots after unsuccessfully auditioning several other people for the role. This decision launched him into pop culture stardom. Mr. Hauldren went on to serve as the inspiration for today’s Empire Today brand. He helped to launch the signature jingle into advertsing history as one of the nation’s most popular jingles.
In a 1997 interview with the Tribune, Mr. Hauldren commented on how the commercials transformed him into a celebrity.
"People are good-natured," he told the Tribune, "but once in a while they'll grab at you and say, 'Here's that carpet dude!' or 'Hey! Aren't you somebody?' I always hope folks understand I'm not a celebrity. I'm just a TV pitchman, a glorified salesman."
Mr. Hauldren was a decorated World War II veteran who continued to lend his voiceover talent to Empire’s commercials until his passing.
In addition, he was known as a key singer in the barbershop quartet arena, recording several albums with the quartet, Chordiac Arrest, and a vocal ensemble called Chicago Natural Gas.
“Lynn was just a joy all the time,” said Tom Felgen, who along with Hauldren sang the popular jingle. ”He was a neat and special guy who was really wrapped up in music and words. He had a very natural way of writing things. When we were singing together, it was total fun all the time.”
Tribune staff writer Kevin Pang contributed to this story.

Fellow "Lemont-ster" Christian Vande Velde is stoked on a new velo campus in my ward.

The cycling subculture is grand. Chicago is among the most accommodating cities for cyclists, and we've already hosted some of the best racing circuits. So it's no surprise an indoor racing facility has been proposed, but the Chicago Velo Campus is probably much further from fruition than some make it seem.
The proposed location of the Chicago Velo Campus is the old U.S. Steel South Works Plant, which stretches along the lake between 79th and 87th streets. The entire site is supposed to be a major redevelopment equipped with residential high rises, retail and commercial development. Dave Matthews Band (the group that shits on Chicago) will be headlining a three-day concert event this July to start showcasing the site.
Emanuele Bianchi is spearheading the Chicago Velo Campus project and has supposedly received an offer on the land. He compares his idea for it to the United Center. The facility will sport: a 250-meter velodrome track, outdoor and indoor mountain bike tracks, an indoor 400-meter running track, fitness center, Olympic-size swimming pool, with restaurants, shops, a cycling museum and a community center.
The United Center cost $175 million, with a wealthy family footing the bills. Bianchi estimates the velodrome to cost $40 million. It'll probably costs much more when you factor in unforeseen construction obstacles and whose campaign fund he has to donate too.
He's projecting construction to start in 2013 with an outdoor track opening on the site this summer. The plan is magnificent, a great idea and I love people accomplishing the American Dream (Bianchi is an Italian immigrant who came stateside in 2004).
But the biggest obstacle is, where's the money? Sponsors are not lining up, donations are not pouring in, and this economy has everything in limbo. Mayor Marty Moylan of Des Plaines announced the city wants a velodrome. With the mayor spearheading the project and the impending influx of casino money, Des Plaines could pedal past Chicago.

Chicago’s own Indoor Velodrome; training and racing in 2013. The Chicago Velodrome will be nearly as large as the Chicago United Center and will host world class cycling events as well as being a multi-use facility with a health club, swimming center and other amenities.

Amenities;
- State of the Art Indoor 250m Velodrome Track

- Outdoor & Indoor Mountain Bike Tracks (MTB)

- Outdoor Cyclocross Track- Triathalon Training Center

- Olympic Sized Swimming Pool

- Indoor 400 meter Running Track and Fitness Center

- Coaching and Olympic Development Training

- Youth Beginner, Elite and Masters Programs

- Community Center

- Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Center

- Sports Retail and a Cycling Museum

- Restaurant, Cafe, and a Healthy Juice Bar

The Chicago Velo Campus will create a vibrant district of sport and health facilities focused on the spirit of cycling and athletic facilities.
The Chicago Velodrome is designed to appeal to all types of athletes with a special emphasis on cyclists. The anchor of the facility will be an indoor world class, 250 meter velodrome that will serve as a setting for a variety of programs from junior development to elite and Olympic development. The VeloCampus will also be home to a BMX park and a dirt loop for cyclocross and mountain bike skills practice.
The location of the Chicago Velodrome will be announced in April 2011.
As construction begins on the ChicagoVeloCampus there are plans on opening a community center and interim wood track which will be used for races starting in June 2011 – more details coming soon…

RIP, 12 years ago

"Ravishing" Rick Rude

Is that Kari, Theresa, Donna & Patty with a mini-Tim Bowen in the background?

1988 at the Hammond Civic Center.

Rude was a four-time world champion (three-time WCW International World Heavyweight Champion, and one-time WCWA World Heavyweight Champion), one-time WWF Intercontinental Champion, and one-time WCW United States Champion. The self-proclaimed "Sexiest Man Alive", Rude was noted for his chiseled physique as well as being one of the greatest talkers in the history of professional wrestling. He is also notable for being a member of the original incarnation of D-Generation X, alongside Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and Chyna.

Rude died at the age of 40 on April 20, 1999 after suffering heart failure as the Columbine High School massacre was unfolding. He is survived by his wife Michelle and their three children. The cause of death may have been an overdose of Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB). An autopsy report showed he died from an overdose of "mixed medications."Rude testified in 1994 that he had used anabolic steroids to alleviate pain in his joints and increase muscle mass.

The best actor in the family, Clint Howard

27 years ago the Good Friday Massacre

The Good Friday Massacre, (French: la bataille du Vendredi saint), was a second-round playoff match-up during the 1984 NHL Playoffs. The game occurred on Good Friday, April 20, 1984 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, between the Quebec Nordiques and the Montreal Canadiens. After a number of fights, a bench-clearing brawl broke out at the end of the second period. When the teams returned to ice for the third period, a second brawl broke out between the teams, including players who had already been ejected from the game but had not been notified prior to their return to the ice. The officials had to be summoned to the rink to restore order.

A total of 252 penalty minutes were incurred and 10 players were ejected. The altercations included the Canadiens' Mario Tremblay smashing the nose of the Nordiques' Peter Stastny, and Louis Sleigher knocking Jean Hamel unconscious by hitting him in the eye. Hamel managed to return for training camp in the autumn of 1984, but sustained another eye injury in Montreal's last pre-season game, prompting him to retire.

Eventually, the Canadiens defeated the Nordiques that night by a score of 5 - 3, thereby winning the series 4 games to 2.

Alinea named No. 6 restaurant in the world

Alinea was named the No. 6 restaurant in the world by London-based Restaurant magazine in its annual ranking of the top 50 restaurants in the world Wednesday, adding a little more luster to an already shining profile. Alinea ranked No. 7 last year.

"It’s an amazing honor to be the No. 1 restaurant in North America for the second year in a row,” said Nick Kokonas, Achatz’s business partner and close friend. “Among the top 10 or 15, I don’t know who the No. 2 or 7 or 10 is. They’re in the same ballpark, and it’s a huge honor to be among all of those and Thomas (Keller’s) Per Se (at No. 10).”

Noma, located in Copenhagen, held down the No. 1 slot for a second straight year.

It is not the first time a U.S. restaurant has ranked so highly on the list. Keller, Achatz’s mentor and former employer, saw his Napa-based French Laundry rank No. 1 in both 2003 and 2004. But given the growing buzz that the list has created since its inception in 2002, an already difficult reservation at Alinea might have just become impossible to get.

For Achatz and the restaurant, it’s yet another achievement in a calendar year that has included the well-received release of a memoir and a coveted three-star rating in Michelin’s inaugural guide to Chicago dining — not to mention the fanfare surrounding his newly opened Next restaurant and Aviary bar.

Any list like Restaurant magazine’s, no matter how esteemed the judges, remains subjective. Is Alinea really no better than The Fat Duck, Heston Blumenthal's place outside of London? Or Ferran Adria's El Bulli on the Costa Brava in Spain? The answer likely depends on the diner and how many hairs they would like to split.

But the list’s power to drive food tourism is undeniable.

When Copenhagen's Noma was named to the top slot last year, it received 100,000 reservation requests in the next two days. Last year, when Alinea moved up to No. 7, the ensuing crush crashed its website's servers and locked up its phones.

“It took us by surprise last year. I was wholly unprepared for the level of interest internationally that it generated,” said Kokonas.

He added that there is a trickle-down effect that benefits the Chicago dining scene’s profile.

“All of a sudden, people in the rest of the world see it’s in Chicago and not New York (at the top of the North American list) and they look at Chicago differently. We have a huge impact on tourism. Forty to 50 percent of our diners are from out of town every day.

“People come to Alinea then stay and go to Publican and then Al’s Italian Beef. They go to Blackbird and Hot Doug’s.”

"I’m excited to see if we can get Next on the list next year," Kokonas said.

Other North American restaurants on the list included Per Se (New York, No. 10), Daniel (New York, No. 11), Le Bernardin (New York, No. 18), Eleven Madison Park (New York, No. 24), Biko (Mexico City, No. 31), Momofuku Ssam (New York, No. 40) and Pujol (Mexico City, No. 47).

The Restaurant magazine list is a compilation of opinions from more than 800 critics, chefs and diners split into 27 regions around the world. The results will be published in the May issue of Restaurant and online at worlds50best.com.

Kokonas said he likes the list, despite its subjectivity, because of its breadth. “It’s interesting because it’s the only world list besides the Michelin guide, and they don’t go everywhere it the world,” he said.
