RIP.... A Chicago Legend...Moose Skowron dies at age 81

Bill “Moose” Skowron, who grew up in Chicago, attended Purdue on a football scholarship and then became a baseball star with the White Sox and Yankees, has died at age 81.

Skowron, who has worked in White Sox community relations the last few years, died Thursday night of congestive heart failure after winning a battle over lung cancer.

Showron’s fame came mostly as a first baseman on the Yankee teams of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. He played three seasons for the White Sox starting in 1964.

In 1965, he was selected to one of his eight All-Star teams. He also appeared on eight World Series teams, five of them champions.

Skowron, a graduate of Weber High School, batted .282 with 211 home runs during a 14-year career.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

Soldier Field drops Coke for Dr Pepper Snapple Group

Fans at Chicago Bears games next season will see a new lineup of soft-drink choices, as Dr Pepper Snapple Group becomes the exclusive soft-drink sponsor of the Bears.

That means Coca-Cola products at Soldier Field for the 2012 season will be replaced by such choices as Dr Pepper, RC Cola and 7 Up.

The seven-year sponsorship deal with DPSG has been in the works since last summer and will be officially announced in the next few days, Chris Hibbs, Bears vice president of sales and marketing, confirmed Monday.

The switch was partly about money. “DPSG came strong from financial investment perspective,” Hibbs said. But Bears officials were also impressed with all the different ways DPSG officials wanted to work together on promotions. “It was an overall vibe from them that was very collaborative,” Hibbs said. “They were hyper-creative.”

The dollar value of the deal is not being released, he said.

Coca-Cola had been the soft-drink partner for at least two decades, Hibbs said. “We just made a business decision to go a different direction,” he said. “It’s not because of anything they did wrong.”

The new sponsor will get a designated area at the south end of Soldier Field, likely to be named Dr Pepper Patio, as a fan-gathering spot. The deal is less about money the Dr Pepper group will make from soft-drink sales at the stadium and more about the exclusive affiliation with the Bears, including broad rights to use Bears trademarks, Hibbs said.

At Soldier Field in 2012, fans will have the choice of eight soft drinks instead of the six previously offered, Hibbs said.

The deal was first reported by SportsBusiness Daily.

To Scott's Fav receiver........Former Bears WR David Terrell Arrested For Battery

Former Chicago Bears player David Terrell is being held on $10,000 bond for a domestic battery charge.
Court documents allege he grabbed his ex-girlfriend during an argument inside his high-rise Chicago apartment and threatened to throw her off a balcony. The 33-year-old was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and appeared in court Saturday.
Terrell's attorney declined to comment, saying his client is innocent. Terrell was arrested Friday.
Chicago police say the woman checked into a Chicago hospital after leaving Terrell's apartment and contacted police.
Terrell, who played for the University of Michigan, was drafted by the Bears in 2001. The wide receiver played four seasons with the Bears and one with the Denver Broncos. He finished his career with 128 receptions and 9 touchdowns.
He's due in court April 30.

It's about time......Emanuel: Rest of city will get curbside recycling by end of 2013

Mayor Rahm Emanuel today said the remaining 340,000 Chicago households that don’t have curbside recycling will get it by the end of 2013.The administration says it can afford to expand the recycling program because pickup has become more efficient in the six months since two private firms started competing with city crews.Though the costs for city crews to pick up recycling are still greater than 50 cents more per bin than Waste Management and Metal Management Midwest, Emanuel left open the possibility that he will continue to split recycling duties in Chicago between public and private crews for the foreseeable future."What will happen, every six months (Streets and Sanitation Commissioner) Tom (Byrne) and his team will evaluate this, and then at one point, if somebody brings down the price even further, we'll rip that band-aid off," Emanuel said. "That's why I want to keep competition in place."The two private firms have served roughly half of the 241,000 Chicago households already in the recycling program and the city has handled the rest. Emanuel made the announcement while talking about the recent expansion of blue cart recycling to about 20,000 additional residences in the Wicker Park, Bucktown and Logan Square neighborhoods. Waste Management will pick up the recycling from those new addresses.Emanuel had talked about citywide recycling as a goal during the mayoral campaign, but today's announcement was the first time he set a date to complete it.

Happy Birthday to Ronnie Lane of the Faces

Ronald Frederick "Ronnie" Lane (1 April 1946, Plaistow Maternity Hospital, Plaistow, East London – 4 June 1997) was an English musician, songwriter, and producer who is best known as the bass guitarist and founding member of two prominent English rock and roll bands; the Small Faces where he was nicknamed "Plonk", (1965–69) – and, after losing the band's frontman, Faces, with two new members added to the line up, (from The Jeff Beck Group), who dubbed him "Three-Piece" (1969–73).
Subsequently Lane collaborated with other musicians, leading his own bands as well as pursuing a solo career while remaining close to his former bandmates. In the late 1970s he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and, despite charity projects and financial support from friends, former bandmates and fans, Lane, after suffering from the disease for 21 years, died at 51.

Tribune Co. did not reach an agreement or come to terms with DirecTV on any aspect of its contract.
Tribune television stations in 19 markets across the country will no longer be available via DirecTV, denying subscribers to the local news, traffic, weather, sports and entertainment programming provided by those stations. DirecTV subscribers will also be unable to watch WGN America, Tribune’s national cable network.
By federal law, without an agreement in place, DirecTV cannot carry the signal of Tribune’s local television stations, Tribune Co. said in a statement.
Tribune’s local stations in the eastern time zone will be the first to be denied by DirecTV to its subscribers. Stations in other time zones will follow, according to the statement.
Any statement by DirecTV indicating that an agreement was reached is inaccurate and misleading.
“This situation is extremely unfortunate,” said Nils Larsen, Tribune Broadcasting president. “We don’t want anyone to lose the valuable programming we provide, but we simply cannot get fair compensation from DirecTV and we cannot allow DirecTV to continue taking advantage of us.”
You can still receive WGN programming on-air once DirecTV cancels the channel.
